MONTAGUE HIGH SCHOOL: 56

The Fruitport Trojans lost their home opener in a back and forth battle with Montague on Tuesday night, 56-51. It was a game of runs, as the Trojans got off to a fast start and led 10-0 after early baskets by Marcelo Conkilin, Cam Schultz, Hunter Gannon, and Luke Mitchell. However, Montague was able to fight back and led by 1 at halftime, 19-18.

The second half looked much like the first, as Fruitport charged out of the break and ended up leading by 11 points in the third quarter. Turnovers and untimely mistakes proved costly, however, Montague was able to claw back and take a lead in the fourth. The Trojans had one more run left, as they shot their way back into a four point lead late in the game. Sophomore Gavin Fisher and Junior Luke Mitchell lead the way in the second half for Fruitport, each hitting four 3-pointers for the game as well as some excellent finishes around the rim. Both Fisher and Mitchell ended up with 20 points a piece.

Montague was able to hit big shots down the stretch as well as many timely free throws. By the end of the game, Montague's team experience payed off, with many seniors leading the way. The Trojans have many first-year varsity players who are continuing to improve  and learn how to play hard and smart at the varsity level,

Besides Fisher and Mitchell, Junior guard Marcelo Conklin showed his importance for Fruitport, as whenever the Trojans went on a run, he was leading the way on the floor. He ended up with 5 points, but more importantly proved necessary in keeping the team on the right track both defensively and offensively.

Coach Erny was proud of the effort given: "While it wasn't the result we were hoping for, there's too many positives to be down for too long after this game. We have to continue our focus in practice over the next week to be prepared for our next game, and the execution and soundness we want to play with will continue to improve."

The Trojans play again next Tuesday, December AT Whitehall at 7 PM. JV play at 5:30 PM, and Freshman play at 4 PM.
