Fruitport Boys Basketball Gets a Big Road Win vs Whitehall, 50-46

Game Date
Dec 4, 2018
Score
TROJANS: 50
WHITEHALL HIGH SCHOOL: 46

The Trojans improved to 1-1 on the season as they defeated Whitehall on the road, 50-46. Fruitport trailed most of the game, taking their first lead mid-way through the 4th quarter. Big shots and free throws down the stretch by Luke Mitchell and Marcelo Conklin helped the Trojans take the lead and keep the lead. Mitchell ended the game with 18 points, and Conklin scored 10.

It was a much more balanced scoring effort for Fruitport, as 7 players scored. Newcomers Rico Jones, Ethan Flores, and Logan Manciu each made contributions in the scoring department off the bench. Manciu ended up with 7, Jones had 6, and Flores had 3. Sophomore Gavin Fisher scored 4 points and Hunter Gannon added 2.

Coach Steve Erny was happy with the effort against a tough Whitehall squad:

"Whitehall always provides a challenge on the boards, as they crash with great energy and effort. We knew we needed to minimize the second chance points. Although we could have done better, our guys team rebounded well in the big moments. Hunter Gannon gave a great effort in that department. Rico Jones also came in and played his role well, helping us with both rebounding and our inside scoring efforts. Logan Manciu and Ethan Flores gave great energy off the bench and especially helped with our defensive pressure. Marcelo Conklin led the team very well tonight by taking care of the ball and scoring in big moments. Luke Mitchell continues to impress me with his shooting touch. But tonight he was even better because of his decision making and ball handling. I also was especially proud of our bench energy, even the guys who didn't get in. Everyone contributed in a positive way tonight. We played hard, smart, and together, which certainly helped us come through with the win."

The Trojans travel down the road to take on Spring Lake Friday night. The game starts at 6PM.
